Mark was referred to the Conwy Employment Hub when the pandemic hit after losing his job. He’d been working in the hospitality industry but was finding the ever changing shift patterns difficult to handle, as well as the lack of security being on a zero-hours contract.
While losing his job and income was devastating, it gave Mark the motivation to look at what he really wanted to do and he set his heart on obtaining his SIA (Security Industry Authority) Licence so he could work in the private security industry.
The SIA is the public body that regulates this industry and it sets out strict criteria to work in this sector. Mark needed to undertake a specialist training course run by an awarding organisation and pass knowledge and skill assessments including First Aid in order to obtain his licence.
With Susan, his mentor’s support, Mark was enrolled on a fully-funded week-long Level 2 Door Supervisor SIA course in North Wales which would allow him to work front line in Clubs, Festivals, Concerts, Retail, Building Sites and Offices. After successfully gaining this qualification, Mark went on to take a 3-day CCTV Level 2 Operator Course, which again was fully-funded, to give him added flexibility of being able to work in a control room monitoring CCTV cameras.
With his new qualifications under his belt, Mark and Susan worked on revamping his CV and together they started applying for security jobs. Mark quickly found a job that he loves and has found that working in security has massively changed his life. He’s now on a fixed-term contract with a shift pattern that enables him to have a healthy work/life balance while earning a decent salary.
