The Electoral Register
You must be on the electoral register to enable you to vote. It also helps you get a credit rating from credit agencies which you may need as you get older when applying for things like a mobile phone or mortgage.
How to Register
Visit www.gov.uk/registertovote or phone Conwy’s electoral office on 01492 576051 or 01492 576052. It only takes a minute and you will need to provide your name, address, date of birth and National Insurance number.
If you would like to vote by post (rather than voting at a polling station) select that you would like a postal vote application form when you register.
Your National Insurance number
You should have received your National Insurance a couple of months before you turned 16. Keep this safe! You will need to provide your National insurance number in other circumstances in the future, for example when you get a job.
Help in locating your National Insurance number can be found at www.gov.uk/lost-national-insurance-number or by telephoning the National Insurance Number Helpline on 0300 200 3500. They will not tell you your National Insurance number over the phone but they will post it out to you.
Voting
- About 2 – 3 weeks before polling day, you will receive a poll card in the post
- The poll card will explain the 3 ways you can vote; either in person, by post or by proxy
- If you have chosen to vote by post you will receive a poll card to advise this is your voting method. You will then receive your ballot papers separately approximately 10 days before Polling Day
- A ballot paper is the piece of paper that you mark your vote on
Voter ID
From 2023 voters in Wales will need to show photo ID to vote in person at a polling station in certain elections.
Voter ID will be required for:
- UK Parliamentary Elections (General Elections)
- Police and Crime Commissioner Elections
- Recall petitions
Voters in Wales will not need to show ID at Senedd (Welsh Parliament) elections or local elections.
For more information on voter ID or if you do not have an acceptable form of photo ID then you can apply and find out more at Apply for Voter ID.
