Nant y Coed Local Nature Reserve

Summary (optional)

The reserve path is currently closed due to storm damage and river erosion. There is no access through the reserve between the Newry Drive entrance and the Three Streams car park at the top of Valley Road.

Footpath access and stepping stones (Update September 2021)

Natural Resources Wales has not approved the plans we submitted to use the river so we could repair the access path. We had planned to complete the repair work before the 15 October deadline for fish spawning, but this is no longer possible.

We are now looking at plans for alternative access while we continue to discuss with Natural Resources Wales about rebuilding the original path.

We are proposing a stepped timber boardwalk with anti-slip surfacing and handrails. This would cross up and over the steep wooded bank and then re-join the existing riverside path, avoiding the eroded section.

We intend to install this ready for Spring 2022 and are already working on detailed plans.

We are looking again at how we can replace the stepping stones and boulders further upstream, without a repaired path to allow access for machinery.

The reserve will remain closed until we have resolved the access issues.

This page will be updated with more information as our revised plans develop.
