Course aims and objectives
Course Outline:
How we speak to people about 'problem behaviours' matters! We can increase or decrease people's motivation.
Motivational Interviewing is a structured communication style which helps people to recognise their problems and to do something about them.
It is especially helpful when people have mixed feelings or ambivalence about making changes.
MI stems from the field of substance misuse but is now used widely in all areas of social work from medication adherence to parenting methods to addressing depression.
This 2 day course gives opportunity to learn the theory and practice the skills.
Participants will
- Understand the spirt and ethos of MI
- Remember your listening skills
- Learn to evoke and reflect back 'change talk'
- Learn to roll with resistance
- Consider timing and readiness when developing change plans
- The importance of enhancing hope and confidence in your client's abilities to change
